New "anti-terror" bill threatens opposition

By   Barry Malone   A draft Ethiopian law could define criticism of the government as a "terrorist act" and be used to crack down on the opposition if it is passed by parliament, a rights group said on Tuesday.
The draft "anti-terrorism proclamation" was drawn up after Africa's second most populous country said it faced threats from several internal rebel groups.
A group of 32 mostly former and serving military officers are on trial accused of planning to topple the government of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. [More]

Quotation of the Day

Cabdriver kicks DLA Piper where it hurts most

DLA Piper hate ad.jpgAn Ethiopian cabdriver in Washington DC. has caused DLA Piper serious embarrassment by displaying an effective ad on top of his cab. "DLA Piper shares blood money with Ethiopian dictators," reads the ad. The unusual ad has already attracted media attention and the story has been widely circulating in cyberspace. DLA Piper is paid $50,000 a month and has already helped the Meles regime to block the passage of HR2003, which has practically died in the US Senate. Other Ethiopian cab drivers are said to have been following suit. "I admire the creative cab driver who has highlighted the plight of his people by exposing unscrupulous DLA Piper," said Tesfa Kebede a DC resident. "It will be more effective if other cab drivers join the campaign. Besides exposing DLA Piper, they can help make Birtukan's case well-publicized."  In response to the ad, DLA piper issued a statement which says it advised the "democratically elected government of Ethiopia." Surprise! [More]
